Based on your math assessment exam score, the Mathematics Department will enter a BMAT score into Banner. This will allow you to register for certain mathematics courses.

*A personal interview with the Math Department's Associate Chair is also required before enrolling in Math 251A. Call (808) 956-4679 to set up an appointment.

Your BMAT score is good for one year. Once entered, you can see your BMAT score by first logging in to MyUH. Then select Star Degree Check / View Transcript, Star for Students, Transcript/Grades, and finally Campus Transcript by Semester.

Quick facts

  • All testing is held in the computer lab,
    Physical Science 208
  • You will not be allowed to take the exam without
    your UH Student ID or an official picture ID.
  • Calculators are not allowed.
  • Bring a pencil.
  • Your score on the exam is valid for one year from the date you took it.

Students may sign up for one of the exams.

Reservations are recommended, but walk-ins are always welcome.

Preparation for the Assessment Exam

  • Take the practice exams (Internet Explorer or Firefox). Note the problems you missed.
  • Review similar problems covered in your high school algebra or geometry.
  • Read "Cliff's Notes: Math Review for Standardized Tests". Available in Hamilton Library, the Bookstore, and Amazon.com
  • To prepare for the Assessment Exam, take Practice Exam Part 1 until your score is ≥14.
    Practice on part 2 to enroll in Math 215 (≥10), 241 (≥12), 251A (≥14) and Phys 151 (≥10).
    On the actual exam in PSB 208, part 2 is taken immediately after part 1.

Repeat policy:

You may take the Assessment Exam once during each of these periods:
  • March 16th through July 15th (good for the Summer and upcoming Fall and Spring),
  • July 16th through November 15th (good for the Fall and upcoming Spring and Summer),
  • November 16th through March 15th (good for the Spring and upcoming Summer and Fall).
Exceptions

You do not need to take the math assessment exam (but you still need to obtain departmental approval) if you either

  • took the test no more than one year ago, or
  • have appropriate transfer credits, or
  • received an acceptable score on the Calculus Advanced Placement Exam, Math SAT, ACT (see details), or
  • completed Math 135 at UHM or at one of the UH Community Colleges or Math 104F at UH Hilo with a C or better.
